UAB Lung Health Center

The Lung Health Center directs several projects devoted to the prevention of lung diseases.
One of them, the Lung Health Study, is designed to determine if an intervention program can prevent the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among cigarette smokers. UAB is participating in this NHLBI-sponsored study along with nine other clinical centers in the United States and Canada.
The Lung Health Center is also a part of the Lung Cancer Substudy funded by the National Cancer Institute, which will follow the Lung Health Study participants for five years to monitor smoking status and the incidence of lung cancer. The core elements of the Lung Health Study have been condensed into a practical, convenient Quitting For Life Stop Smoking Program, which the Lung Health Center offers to UAB employees.
In addition, the Center also operates the Comprehensive Asthma Program, which works with individuals with asthma and other allergic breathing problems to help them develop normal, active lifestyles.
Pharmaceutical Studies

The Lung Health Center is involved in many pharmaceutical studies. In the past 3 years, it has been involved in 13 pharmaceutical studies of COPD and asthma and four more are scheduled for later in 1998.
