Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at UAB Hospital is fast paced and serves as Alabama’s only Level I Trauma & Burn Center. Our Nurses are trained in Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Hazardous Materials.

• Primarily adult patients with some pediatric patients

• Ranging from 1:1 to 1:3 based on patient acuity

• 7a-7p
• 10a-10p
• 1p-1a
• 3p-3a
• 7p-7a
• Weekend only option

Skill Mix

• Registered Nurse - 70%
• Patient Care Technician - 30%

Nursing Unit Orientation

• Individualized by experience
• 12 weeks minimum for new graduates
• 1:1 preceptor for newly-hired nurses
• Unit-based educators
